Try 'Fight Back'. Here's the website:

Or you can consult a lawyer. Lawyers usually give a consultation for free. You can ask the lawyer to write a letter to the landlord of the property. A letter should not cost more than a couple of hundred dollars. Once the landlord gets a letter from a lawyer explaining how they will be taken to court, I'm SURE something will be done, pronto. The threat of a lawsuit is usually the catalyst to action, unfortunately.

United Collections Bureau is after me!!! I need help with getting a loan!!!! Please, advice would help!!?

Hi,

I'm on the verge of a breakdown and need your help.

I owe $1,400 to United Collections Bureua. I ran up debt on my CitiCard a year ago, racked up interest and my debt was sent to UBC.

I had a $1,000 payment posted from my bank account for this past Monday, but suddenly, I needed the money for rent or else I'd be sued by landlord. The payment postted to UBC was rejected.

Now Mr. Thomas, my rep who's been doing my account at UBC, is threatening legal action and saying because the check posted to my account was bad, it will be reported to the state, for looking into check fraud. This wasn't fraud, I didnt fake or lie about certain info or steal! I just couldn't come up with the money. That's called debt! I told him that and he was silent. He knew it's not fraud.

They called my sister too, feel bad. What should I do? Should I just mail in the money I owe when I can come up with it? Or should I call my family attorney and sue? This is against the laws for what debt collectors can doUnited Collections Bureau is after me!!! I need help with getting a loan!!!! Please, advice would help!!?
They are just trying to get the money. They have a right to still collect because your payment didn't go through. Call a supervisor there and explain what happened. See if you can make a goodfaith down payment of a few hundred now (if you can afford that) and make a promise to pay the remainging amount soon. See if they can work with you on it. Explain that you are working to pay this off and want to make good on the debt.United Collections Bureau is after me!!! I need help with getting a loan!!!! Please, advice would help!!?

My name are Della Ross, I鈥檓 from United State. i want to take this medium to say a big thanks to Mr. Donald George, when i was in search of a loan of $30,000 USD, after been a victim of scammers on the internet, then a friend of my directed me to this site, and she told me that i can post my loan request here on the site, which i did. After that i saw an advert from one Mr. Donald, that he can help me, that he render loan to individual and company that is in need of loan, so i said that i should give him a trail, so i apply for the loan of $30,000 USD, after agree with the terms and conditions of the loan, and the loan of $30,000 USD was transfer to my bank account within a short period of 24 hours, I鈥檓 saying all this because, i want to let you known that, on the internet where there is a scammers, there is still a reliable and legitimate persons too, Donald George is a God sent to my loan request, if you will like to contact him, you can reach him through this contact; E-mail: donald_george85@yahoo.com

Best regards,

Della.
If you sent in a check for $1000 knowing you did not have the money in the account to cover it it's considered check fraud and it's illegal. The debt collection company has the right to continue to come after you for the debt owed. Explain to the collection agency that you will make a good faith payment of a couple of $100 if you can, they cannot force you to pay what you don't have and they must work with you. If you show you're making payments they have to work with you, otherwise you could just walk away from the monies owed, people do it all the time, most of the time when people don't pay the debt is charged off.

The landlord will not sue you for non payment of rent, you will receive a 7 day notice to pay or quit, if you dont' pay after that then you will get a 3 day notice after that he will file eviction, it'll take at least 3 months to get you evicted. If you pay rent when you receive the 7 day notice you'll be fine. Landlords don't sue, they evict.

Would you offer your services to the local Citizens Advice Bureaus ?

they already know ?and they do referWould you offer your services to the local Citizens Advice Bureaus ?
    I have in the past.

In my previous life I was a trained counsellor with a psychology degree.

I have been on 'reception' at the CAB as I had knowledge of many different services that may be able to help in a specialised field.

I enjoyed my time there; even though I was often sworn and shouted at.

I consider it good training for coming on here!Would you offer your services to the local Citizens Advice Bureaus ?
You really need specialist knowledge in a chosen field. I think most volunteers would be ex local government officers for example Housing benefit or council tax. Or lawyers specialising in immigration or employment law. Things are so much more complicated these days I don`t think I would be much use!
yes i would but i would prefer to offer my help to people suffering with anxiety and depression on a help line.
    I doubt I'm qualified.
I've thought of joining the Samaritans, but I know I'd encourage people to jump! I'll just get my coat.
    If what I say makes a difference, yes. I wouldn't care if it's a non-paying service.
    probably not.
If I had any extra Time...!!
    Yes i would!
If it helps others i probably would.
    No,,,
well i would , but would they really want mine Arabella xxx
yes, if it helps another person then i would.
    yes i would..
yeah on how not to get into debt
No, only if they paid me as good as Yahoo does! hahaha xox
    YES! just hope they listen.
i don,t think they would like my advice

    on how to run thing

Hi I'm a 2nd Year Law student and have just got a position at the Citizen Advice Bureau in London?

Is this a good step, as apparently you get 6 months of your training contract when you complete your CAB training.

Some moaning person said this could be a hindrance as she had done the training which didn't do her or her studies any good.

Truly don't understand that, but then it depends on your passion, and i'm excited to do it as I will be trained in various subjects.

Has anyone trained at the CAB as an adviser?? whats it like, and will it help.Hi I'm a 2nd Year Law student and have just got a position at the Citizen Advice Bureau in London?
Remember that people study law for all manner of different reasons, ranging from an urge to set the world aright to a desire to get rich. This sounds like a great opportunity for someone who is interested in helping people and gaining wide experience of the kind of problems which people come up against in life and of how to set about coping with them. If this idea is exciting to you, then it sounds as though you are an ideal candidate and that your positive approach could make this experience of benefit to you if not immediately, then certainly in retrospect.

If i lose my job what can the citzen advice bureau do?

in regards of me having a loan that is unsecured of course i would want to get back in to work as soon as possible but if my work sacks me because my job is target based how can i be able to pay my loan if i dont have job and i am also looking for a job to get back into. the loan ppl did advise that if i had income like job seekers they could reduce monthly payments til i get back on feet but if no income i wud have to go to a third party i.e citzens advice.

also i was concern as i living with my parents in a council place they wud come and take all my parents stuff in the house because i am not paying the loan. the loan ppl advised me thats not the case and that my loan is not secured against my parents house or any items and that the only ppl that have authority is inland revenue and the council she did say that if i didnt pay anything at all and ignored all corresponsdence then it wud mayb pass to a independent debt collector who will knock on my parents door and ask for me but just for payment appararently they have no right to come in to the property take stuff. the person who told me is from the loan ppl i got the loan off which is lloyds and she worked in collections and debt recovery so i guess she knows the rules please helpIf i lose my job what can the citzen advice bureau do?
Citizens Advice will tell you how to make an offer of payment to the loan company. With an unsecured loan it is in the best interest of the loan company to accept a reasonable offer of payment. If i lose my job what can the citzen advice bureau do?
lets face it - you ignore letters and phone calls from Lloyds and they will pass the debt on to debt collectors. not good - they will put their own charges on top and you end up with a bigger debt to pay. you have done the right thing - you have informed them that you may experience trouble paying the debt if you loose your job and the alternative is to arrange to pay reduced payments until your situation improves. all good. dont worry if you do loose your job you make smaller payments - Lloyds will be happy because you are paying them something instead of nothing and you wont be having people knocking on the door demanding money. the loan isn't secured on anything so there isn't anything they can demand - apart from some money from you (however much you can afford) the only thing i can say is - dont go back on any agreements you have with Lloyds if you have difficulties or the debt will be asked for in full with no negotiations.

ps - hope everything goes well and you are worrying over nothing :)
go to citizens advice, it's a free service and they will advise you and contact your creditors (debts) to suggest pro-rata payments to each of them which is calculted on how much you owe to each company but 'only after you have deducted all your living expenses' like rent, food, council tax, gas, electric, clothing travel costs, etc etc, then what ever is left would be distributed to your creditors as a 'slice of the cake' to each one. do not delay or ignore your creditors, get it sorted out asap. It may be that whilst on jsa you may only have to pay a nominal sum like 拢1 per month until you get paid from a job.
Citizens Advice can tell you your rights and responsibilities.

If you can't afford to keep up your loan payments, you can agree a repayment schedule you can afford with the lender. If you're not confident to do this yourself, Citizens Advice can do it for you.

Provided you keep in touch with your lender and you do what you promised to do, they won't send the debt collectors round. If they do, they can make a lot of fuss, but they can't take anything away without a court order and they're not allowed to take anything that doesn't belong to you.

I can't get through to Runnymede Citizens Advice Bureau, it's always engaged... what can I do?

Their line open/closing times are rubbish so there are only a few windows a week when I can ring them, and when I do it is constantly engaged, I've been trying for 2 weeks! I don't think I can just drop in, where else can I phone? I live in Runnymede Borough so I don't know if I can talk to a citizens advice bureau in a different borough, is there another one in Runnymede?

ThanksI can't get through to Runnymede Citizens Advice Bureau, it's always engaged... what can I do?
You could probably phone any CAB in the country for advice - they can give advice over the phone - if you need an appointment though I am not sure what you could do - have you left a message on the answer machine or does it not give you the option to do that. If you contact another CAB I'm sure if you explain the problem to them there is a way they can contact their head office and contact the relevant bureau for you.

  • Too embarassed to go to Citizens Advice Bureau...?

    Here are the facts:

I'm 19 years old, transgender, and have messed up a lot of college since I left school because of family problems. I'm starting this sept for a full time college course and am hoping to finish this one and put in all my efforts. However, I'm living with a parent who I do not get on with. I have received abuse/harassment from them in the past but that has now stopped.

I'm looking for part-time work and hopefully will soon be getting 10 hours a week if I do get employed whilst I'm at college.

What I want to know is what I'm entitled to. Including housing and benefit.

Any information is greatly appreciated.Too embarassed to go to Citizens Advice Bureau...?
    Good for you.

There are student mentors at college and they will be able to advise you and even get you accommodation if you are being abused at home.

You are entitled to a grant whilst at college. Get to see the mentor as soon as you start college as funds and accommodation is limited.

Good Luck.Too embarassed to go to Citizens Advice Bureau...?
Yep, the job centre will give the advice you need you can ask for a private room and they will give you it. And here don't ever be ashamed or embarrsed of who you are.
Your local Council are there to help you regarding housing benefits and you can phone Job Centre Plus and they will even do a claim over the phone. Never be embarrassed about who you are. Good luck.
if your in the uk just contact your local jobcenter plus or look them up online, you will be entitled to something ,what that is exactly depends on your individual circumstances, don't waste your time being embarrassed about things Beond your control.

    be lucky:)
Go down to the job centre and ask them about housing benefits and job seekers for whilst you are looking for a job. If you want to move out of your parent's house, then you may be entitled to a council house, or at least some help with housing. I'm not sure what the ages are, but you may be entitled to EMA, or some sort of adult learning grant, but again you would have to go down to the job centre to ask them about it, because it all depends on personal circumstances, etc etc.

As to getting employment, your college should be able to help you get a job, if you're having difficulty finding somewhere, because they often have links with local businesses etc. and often companies send notice of any vacancies that students could fill to schools and colleges in the local area.

Volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau?

Im a student at the moment and thought that Id quite like to help out at my local Citizens Advice bureau - its supposedly pretty good on your cv and I think it might be quite interesting.

So my question is - can i do this only for a couple weeks say over Easter? Or do I need to commit more time? Ive got work experience lined up for my summer already so I wouldnt have more than 2/3 weeks max to help out. But I still wana do it, is that too short a time? Any help is much appreciated!Volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau?
They're not going to give you a job advising the punters, but they're always glad of admin help. Ring your local CAB and speak to the manager. The best time is about 9:30 - when the staff are in but not the customers.Volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau?

Can anyone give advice on what happens after you take a company to an Employment Bureau?

Are these people there to support the employee or employerCan anyone give advice on what happens after you take a company to an Employment Bureau?
Do you mean tribunal? The tribunal is there to make a fair and balanced decision regardless of whether it's in favour of employer or employee. Employment law in the UK and Europe does tend to favour the employee although not so much in the US. If you're in the UK, contact ACAS for advice or view their website at http://www.acas.org.uk/Can anyone give advice on what happens after you take a company to an Employment Bureau?
One goes to an Employment Bureau looking for work. Why would you take a Company there? If you mean Arbitration Tribunal then they are supposed to be impartial.

Would you be any good in a citizens advice bureau? Could you help people sort out their troubles?

    Citizens Advice Bureau volunteering?

Does anyone know what the training for volunteering at the CAB involves and how long it takes? (In the UK)

Thanks in advance.Citizens Advice Bureau volunteering?
The training programe consists of observation, working through self-study packs, and a five-day course run by Citizens Advice. You will be supported throughout your training by an in-bureau Guidance Tutor. Most bureau have several trainees at any one time, so you are likely to be training with other new volunteers. This is as much i can tell you from the information you have given me so i hope this helps. That is for advisor if you wanna do other positions will prob be similar you can have a look on citizens advice website or here's a link to part of it.

Follow the advices which suits and not every thing. There is nothing difficult if you have reached upto this extent you can achieve what ever you want have patient and do little hard work.I'm a 2nd %26amp; got a 2.2 i have experience with the citizens advice bureau what more can i do to get a...?
';I'm a 2nd'; is meaningless to me. Consider going back to Citizens Advice as an unpaid general advice volunteer - they won't give you a training contract but they often have paid work vacancies and you will be well-placed to apply for suitable work while you are waiting to get a training contract. Choose the largest Bureau in your area as a lot depends on how much LSC work they do. Face-to-face work with clients will improve your casework skills and writing up your cases on the CAB database will sharpen your ability to write case reports

I also agree that going for a post as a legal executive or trainee legal executive is good advice, because you will be getting practical experience in a solicitors practice and if you shape up they may offer you a training contract.

Otherwise, I suggest that you work hard on improving your written literacy skills - to work in Law you must be able to spell correctly, use capital letters in the right places, use punctuation properly, construct sensible sentences and string them together in a way that makes sense. If your skills in this area are lacking, your applications for employment will get as far as the waste paper bin. I'm afraid that the way you have worded your question makes me think that you've got a long way to go.

After a long wait the citizens advice bureau, told me that they can't help me?

  • Im going to OZ in the new year i was recommended to pay for Advice before going to the visa Bureau ?

i was recommended by a website online to pay for visa advice before applying for my visa abroad to Australia from London (im a British citizen....) Im 29 so getting a years working holiday visa wont be a problem but i want to stay a bit longer. Has anyone paid for such advice ? can you guys recommend anyone ?Im going to OZ in the new year i was recommended to pay for Advice before going to the visa Bureau ?
There is no need to pay for visa advice if you just follow the procedures of the Australian government websites concerning working holiday visa procedures. Forget about stupid commercial websites being promoted here.

If you plan to go to Australia in the next year [allegedly being 30 then] you cannot apply for a second Working Holiday Visa even if you have done three months [88 days] of specified work since you would not meet the age prerequisites any longer.

http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-鈥?/a> ..Im going to OZ in the new year i was recommended to pay for Advice before going to the visa Bureau ?
Whatever you do, don't pay for any advice! You simply don't need to do so, and stay away from sites such as workpermit which are fronts for fee charging companies.

Get your Working Holiday visa from the official government site on which you'll pay 拢115 and which gives you 100% accurate and up to date information on how the visa works and exactly what's needed to qualify you for a second WHV if you want to stay a bit longer.

    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-鈥?/a>

    Second WHV eligibility:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-鈥?/a>

As you're 29 now, be aware that you must apply for your second WHV before you turn 31, so you won't be able to put off coming on your first one for much longer.

If you for some reason don't end up qualifying for a second WHV, it will be very difficult indeed to stay any longer than the 12 months of your first WHV if you wish to work. You will only be able to do so if you can find an employer to sponsor you for a Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) visa and that won't be easy to do. You must have qualifications and experience in an eligible occupation and the employer must be eligible and willing to go to the considerable expense and jump through the many hoops required to be a sponsor.

VisaFirst and other similar companies charge for information and guidance that you can get for nothing at any of the many backpacker sites such as http://www.bugaustralia.com/essentials/
you can not pay to stay longer, if you do 3 months seasonal work on your 1st working holiday visa you can apply for a second

do not use the visa bureau, get your visa from the australian website

you must apply for the 2nd visa before you turn 31 as you will no longer be eligible
OOh Ohh! I have your answer. I went to visafirst.com and it was so easy! I got a 12-month working holiday visa, and you just pay for the visa (I think it was 3 hundred and some canadian dollars.. Not sure how that translates into pounds) Also they organize everything else for you like a bank account, a tax number, a mobile phone number, and a bunch of other stuff you wouldnt even think about getting for yourself! And if you want to stay for a little longer, you have the option to apply for a 2nd year visa as long as you work a couple of months in Agriculture during your first year in Australia. as far as advice, you can ask the Visa First staff anything you like via email or phone, they are there to answer your questions anytime from the time you apply for the visa right through your whole preparation for the trip, and your entire stay in the country.

They would only refer you to another professional anyways.

You'd be better off seeing a solicitor for a free 30 minute chat. If it's a legal matter. Is there any point in calling the citizens advice bureau?
hi, i work for CAB and know first hand how frustrating it can be not being able to get through on the phone when you are desperate for advice.

the problem is mainly due to the fact that each bureau is a charity who relies heavily on funding and volunteers, and more often than not there just aren't the resources for people to man the phones or deal with messages.

my best advice at this stage would be to pop along to the bureau - you can search for the nearest and find the opening hours on the link below. if they are not open for drop0in advice they may be able to give you an appointment.

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/ - there may also be some basic info/advice you need on the website.

there is also this advice website which is much more helpful and informative! http://www.advicenow.org.uk/

another alternative is finding your nearest law centre http://www.lawcentres.org.uk/lawcentres/

I hope this helps, and feel free to drop me an email as i may be able to give you some basic info or signpost you to the right place. Rebecca x
Contact your local Trading Standards office as they'll have fully qualified business advisers.

To find your local office details go to the Trading Standards Central website. http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/index鈥?/a>
They are always inundated with calls. Why don't you find out where the local office is and go and speak to them in person!!

Alternatively, try calling them sneakily from work (no phone bill)!!

Hi!! I've experience some serious hardships and was able to pay back a student loan in the last 12 years. I checked and those records are still on my credit profile. Surprisingly I still got a credit score of 728. If I dispute those old records is there a remote chance that my old bank might have lost the records and then I may get hem deleted from my record? Can you give me a bit of advice about the credit bureau?
If it's Trans Union, call their customer service # 1-800-916-8800 then type in the reference # which should be right above your name and address on the report. That will transfer to a live rep.

I hate to say it but 拢1m isn't 'big money' in today's terms. I agree that charities should be 'squeaky clean' but when it comes down to it this amount today buys you one four/three bed house in Tower Hamlets or similar areas in London. Which, when you compare to what the city bankers have done is peanuts, it is interesting that we apparently choose to assess the mortgages of the less well-off down to the last 50p to question their ability to remain in their local areas whilst we subsidise property developers with zillions to 'invest' and to break up what still exists of traditional communities for commercial gain.
I haven't seen this yet, but am totally apalled that they have taken advantage of the Citizen's Advice buffs. These folk do thier utmost to help out folk in need and do not need eejits putting doubt in others who need the facility. I have used the CAB twice in my life and both times have been an absolute Godsend. As I understand it, the CAB buffs give thier time for free or tiny amounts of dosh, as they are only interested in helping folk out.. There is absolutely no excuse for trying to fleece anybody, it's dis-honest...
Yes the 拢1million they have nicked will be a crime, but Fred the bank manager who as taken 拢16million get to keep his, Jackie smith the dishonest politician keeps hers, the crime is not stealing from the CBA the crime is not leaving it for the corrupt politicians to steal.
Probably, but this kind of thing is as old as the hills. It's just a shame that they had to sully the good name of the CAB while doing it.
I was`nt aware CAB dished out money. I knew they received grants for the general running of their offices , heating and telephones etc.,, but what money was being stolen to the sum of 拢1m without someone ';noticing';.
They probably tapped into an advice line to the House of Commons, the same one Jacqui Smith,McNulty and the rest use.
They found some New Labour policies and duplicated them.
Probably a Jeffrey Archer novel. :P

Has anyone had any experience with the debt advisers at the Citizens Advice Bureau?

    Are they any good?

What happens?Has anyone had any experience with the debt advisers at the Citizens Advice Bureau?
Yes they were very good, they go through all the paper work with you , they will then see if they can sort things out for you.Has anyone had any experience with the debt advisers at the Citizens Advice Bureau?
To be honest , i did not find them very helpful. In fact by doing what they advised me to do i was worse of , and also that way could of affected my credit rating. so not to pleased with them, i am sorry to say.
not personally, but i know they are extremely helpful. Depending on what type of debt it is depends on the procedure. If you can provide all the paper work relevant to your situation, bank statements/receipts/letters from companies etc. etc. and your current income/outgoings they will invest a lot of time sorting out this problem for you. They will usually come up with suitable solution to correct the problem with little extra outgoings on your behalf. And its free!!! My advice is to go and see them as soon as possible, its usually best to phone before going, to make an appointment, and get this situation sorted. Good luck!
    Hello

I was a debt adviser for the CAB!

Every CAB Adviser gets specialist debt training, so a Generalist Adviser will be able to help you. Some CABs have Debt Advisers as the number of debt cases that come through the door is so great that specific debt advisers are needed.

Basically all the advice and information you get from CAB is free and impartial which is more than you can say of other companies.

The Debt Adviser will get all your information and give you all the options that you have available to you.

This might mean an IVA, which they will help you sort out.

Bankruptcy which they will advise you how to file.

They can even help you write to creditors and arrange payment plans.

Depending on what you want to happen then the adviser will help you, they will give you as much or as little help that you need.

The first thing the adviser will do is work out all your creditors and how much you owe them, you then work out how much income and expenditure you have, any money left over (surplus income). This should give you a good idea of what your options are.

If you decide on going for an IVA then your surplus income is then split pro-rata to all the creditors. Letters are then sent to the creditors with the payment plan (along with all you income and expenditure sheets so on)

You must also pay special attention to priority debts. These are debts that can leave you homeless, or with loss of amenities or in prison. (like tax, utility bills, rent so on)

If the CAB start to help you with your debts, they usaully ask you to sign a form saying that you will only do what you agreed with them, so basically you cant get CAB writing all the letters and setting up payment plans only for you to go and change the agreements on your own. The CAB have a decent name and creditors and courts tend to take that into account so its def worth using the advice they offer.

There are other companies that can offer you free advice too, CCCS and Debtline are often used by some Bureaus who have too many Debt clients on their books so you could try them if you didnt like CAB.

And dont forget if you dont find them helpful, you can ask to see another adviser.

    Good luck.
    yes, they were brill.

they take all your details and then they write to all your creditors(this will stop the lovely letters they send you, in time).then they work out a payment plan for you. then you just pay what your told, when your told to, but a word of advice. never miss a payment, as the creditors take this as your in violation of your agreement with them. if you have problems paying then just ring the creditors and tell them. it should be ok( i forgot to make a payment once until about 5 days later, but i rang them explained and they were ok with it) xx xx
i went to cab for help with my debts in dec last year, they were very help full and understanding. they sat down with me and went through all my finances and offered to write to all my creditors with offers of payment. one thing i can say is that they are snowed under with work at the moment with the current debt crisis that this country seems to be in, and had a back log of cases. because of this they were taking a long time to deal with my creditors (through no fault of their own, they do a very good job just under funded). i was still getting nasty letters and being threatened with bailiffs etc so i decided to write to them myself using information from the cab advice guide on-line. http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/debt.htm

once i knew what i was doing i sent them all offers of payments along with my personal budget and copies of my income, which at the time was just my benefit award notices. thankfully they all accepted the proposed payments and i haven't missed a payment since.

cab is a great place to go for help but its not that hard to do it yourself, i felt a lot more in control as i knew what was going on all the time and once you get talking to your creditors on the phone and they can see that you are genuinely in financial hardship and are willing to make payments they too can be very help full.

hope this helps and good luck in becoming debt free!!!!
Only in so much as I refer clients in my paid job. By and large, they are excellent, non-judgmental, skilled and good negotiators with debtors and the organisations that are owed money. They work out a payment plan and negotiate with your creditors.
Debt Advice is one thing that the CAB does and l am sure they are good at what they do as they get so much practice. An alternative would be more specialist debt advisors. Here's a few commercial and non-commercial ones to consider:

Someone else advised you to use Debt Free Direct http://www.debtfreedirect.co.uk . I can tell you that they are probably the oldest and biggest specialist debt company, so a good contact to have.

Another is the CCCS or debt advisors in the same way the Debt Advice Trust are http://www.debtadvicetrust.org . These two are operated not to make a profit where Debt Free Direct is there to make a profit, but I must add offer regulated good responsible advice.

These are the only contacts I can say I have experience of, but all three are genuinely good.

    Good luck!
Yes, they are pretty good but I would recommend Debt Free Direct who are better (and don't charge any fees either in case you are worried about that).

I used the CAB and they weren't as straightforward and easy as Debt Free Direct.

    Call them on 0845 2960135

    Good luck!

Has anyone actually ever got hold of their local Citizen's Advice Bureau by phone at the specified times?

I have been trying mine for weeks - engaged permenantly - I work so I can't just 'pop down there'Has anyone actually ever got hold of their local Citizen's Advice Bureau by phone at the specified times?
The CAB are ridiculously under-funded and under staffed.

You really need to just book a day off, turn up early wait your turn. This would be a good time to put all your thoughts about your problem onto paper.Has anyone actually ever got hold of their local Citizen's Advice Bureau by phone at the specified times?
Same in the North East ,they never answer the phones...
Nope, I just turned up after weeks of calling and was seen after about 30mins of waiting.
No, I had same problem a while back, then when I did get through to someone. They let me tell them the whole story and then said they did not know how to help but there might be someone in next week who could? I gave up.
no never!!I got thru once and they then just hung up immediately before i had even spoken!!
No, and to make matters worse i have visited their offices 4 times now and twice there was a sign stating that it was closed due to staff shortages and twice stating that they had locked the doors to allow the line of waiting customers to be cleared, i looked through the widow and the waiting room was empty.
Yes, just once. When they picked up I was so stunned I could hardly speak.

Can you write them a letter explaining your predictament? Maybe they can help you via mail, or have a specific time to call them when they are free to talk to just you.

    xx
i'm quite lucky i work next door to mine, have you tried phoning another branch
guess i'm lucky, we have a great cab offices around here, plus my mates sister is a manager in one!! try ringing a different branch? (ones in the north west are great ;-) )

Is Citizens Advice Bureau the best place to go if I can't afford to pay household bills?

Or is there anywhere else I can get help with payments at all?Is Citizens Advice Bureau the best place to go if I can't afford to pay household bills?
Hi, I have been stressed out with financial problems. The cab have financial advisors now. They can advise but they can also help you with a budget plan and write to creditors as well as deal with other things. They are friendle and helpful as well as taking a lot of the stress of you. It even helps that someone will listen and not judge you. Hope this helps. Take careIs Citizens Advice Bureau the best place to go if I can't afford to pay household bills?
yeah they can help.. they will be able to contact companys on your behalf and tell them your having trouble and arrange payment plans. also they will let you know if your intitled to benifits even if you have a job.. hope that helps
There are low income benefits to raise you up to a government accepted standard of living. But if you cannot pay your water bill then dont, since thelate 90's the utility companies can no longer cut you off (because of human rights!). They still have to supply you if you don't pay, at least the water companies do, not sure about the others.
go to citizens advice first sort out household bills with them, they are really good.then get yourself sorted out at the job centre or even try collages for courses it all takes time but you will get there
ck with welfare it doesn't sound good but at least it a start
No, the best place to go first is your biggest sister, then your middle sister, then your Mum, if you can't get the help there, you should then write to each of your bill companies explaining your situation, I'm sure you've got plenty of people who will help you do that.

Why are some people so judgemental, I know Fairy has been looking for a job there for at least two years, she's been for interviews and there has been no joy there, she IS looking for work and doesn't want to spend the rest of her life on benefits, please, if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!
It's a very good place to start. Be very cautious about offers of debt reconciliation loans, cards, all the rest. Do you have an accountant or banker friend? Use him/her.

There's also credit unions, depending on where you live; they are generally charities and can be good at advising you.
Citizens Advice may be able to advise you on benefits you may be able to claim
You can't get help at all. The CAB might help you find a loan or get some of your payments lowered but they really aren't as good as some people say they are. I can't think of anywhere else you can go though. The jobcentre wouldn't help either unless you are on some kind of benefit, even then you will be VERY lucky for them to help. You could see if the CAB would give you advice on finding a job as well. They will be more useful than the jobcentre.

I know you are not entitled to any benefits or anything which makes this so stupid, you are trying and don;t have enough money to live on but because your circumstances don't fit their criteria. Well anyway, I can help you work out your finances but if I see that there is always more going out than coming in and nothing can be changed to accomodate it then you will have to go to the CAB.

I would like to know why some people assume you are ';sponging'; just because you can't pay bills. I have never owned my own playstation, computer or car and I had plenty of years without the other things. I still struggled to pay the bills. It doesn't help to insult people. It also annoys me when people think it's so easy to get a job. It might be for some people but if there is no work where you live or you don't have the right qualifications for what is available, or even if you do, there is no guarantee that you will be offered a job.
The citizens Advice will do just that, advise. They are unable to give you any more info than you could get from a reasonable amount of research on their website and others. The first thing you need to do is talk to the people you owe, they will useually be more than happy to arrange payment plans as they would rather this than no money at all. If the worst happens and you simply cannot pay then your job centre will be able to arrange pauyment on you behalf which would then be paid back to them in very small weekly amounts.
Contact you local Food Bank and they will direct you. I know there is funding available through some electric companies themselves but it's based on Need, income, and first come first sever.

The next option is to contact some of your local churches for assistance. You don't have to be a member either.

The local welfare office can also assist you.

The only way to go now is UP.....

    Good Luck!
citizens advice will help. in north east there is something called DAWN who..if you really can't afford to pay, will give you loads of help and arrange everything for you without charge. citizens advice should give you the name of a similar debt management company
The CAB can help you by putting in touch with a debt management company who will hopefully be able to help you sort out and pay your bills. Good luck.
The best place to go to is the want ads, and they can help you find a job. A second one, if need be. Earn a living like the rest of us, take care of yourself and cut back on expenses if you need to. I spent most of my adult life without such luxuries as a cell phone, a computer, a playstation, a tv, or even a car. Now that I have them, I'd sell them or do whatever it takes to be RESPONSIBLE, rather than go looking to sponge off other people.

  • Citizen advice bureau, I have an interview soon, Can someone tell me what to expect in concern of the ?

Literacy and Numeracy and Letter writing test I will have to take. Really want to practice, to be competent in the task they prescribe me on the day.

ThanksCitizen advice bureau, I have an interview soon, Can someone tell me what to expect in concern of the ?
I imagine it'd be things like making sure your grammar and punctuation is correct, and basic numeracy. I did a LearnDirect test on that in one of my previous jobs and found it very easy. It was multiple choice. I know we used to work quite closely with CAB, not sure if they would still use them now though.

I urgently need free legal advice , but have just started working and cant get to an advice bureau?

as they are closed when I get in. I cant phone from work. Any suggestions?I urgently need free legal advice , but have just started working and cant get to an advice bureau?
This one is really good. I have posted questions on here and have had them answered. You can also search past questions which can be really helpful as well. Also....it's free.I urgently need free legal advice , but have just started working and cant get to an advice bureau?
This is the advice website of the Citizens Advice Bureau. If what you need isn't on here, you really need to make the time to see them. Maybe there's a Law Centre or CAB near you that works out of office hours?

    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/
If you go into more detail, you will be able to receive 'free legal advice' via Yahoo!

Unfortunately the Citizen Advice Bureau is underfunded. They always have limited opening times. The service only operates for 2 days per week in my own town.

The CAB does have its own website, however, and there is limited advice available.

You say that you are working, are you in a Union? Some Unions offer free legal advice or even have a legal help line you can ring. For example if you work in a shop you may be able to join USDAW (Union of shop, distributive and allied workers) and they offer a free legal help scheme. It may be worth checking this out!
post it on here then, youll get loads of free advice, some will be **** but some will be correct, you need to put it in the right catagory though
    Same problem in the UK.

Take a day off work, or write first and try an appointment.

If your firm is any good, they should allow you time off regardless of how long you have been there, even if unpaid.
Oh well, no sense trying to leave them a message explainig that you would like to contact them after hours or anything like that, or sending them an email or a fax or call them during your break if only to find out how to reach them later...nope no way to communicte off-hours with anyone in this world at all!
    Tinker gave the correct answer.

However, if you are set on the CAB; You will need to contact them some way or they will not be able to help.

If you can phone and you will need to, You will be able to inform them of your dilemma.

Sorry I can't help other wise.

I'm sure there are some Legal Beavers on this Web Site, so post your question on Legal.
I understand that some solicitors are able to give free advice for a small period of time I think 30minutes? surely there is one near to where you work try it , nothing lost is there, good luck.

Intrested in doing some work for the citizens advice bureau or get into something simular?

Any ideas or anything i could start with beacuse basically i'm a law student and i'm actually bored at the moment i have read endless books and done my work i love to be hands on and apply things but i have been rejected from a total of 18 work experience places i applied for so maybe if i went in another direction i was thinking of CAB or anything else any other ideas of voluntry legal work? all help appreciatedIntrested in doing some work for the citizens advice bureau or get into something simular?
Yeah, I got at least one that was passed back from White house via Health %26amp; human Services. They suggested that I be an advocate for setting term limits on Judges and how for back into a bad Judges history people should be able to appeal, if he was disciplined. I think if a judge is removed, there ought to be a time limit on how far back cases he's worked can be appealed. It would cut down on the cost of appeals and enable a quicker way to clean up system and remove bad judges easier. Right now, it's easier to let them run their course, %26amp; if have to, pay retirement, versus costly investigations %26amp; appeals. The percentage of ethical misconduct %26amp; people trapped in this situation, doesn't warrant a need for change. It's easier to have the acceptable loss %. If we set limits to 2 yrs, instead of entire career, more people's lives, like mine would be easier, %26amp; more likely to remove. I've been fighting same jerk 17yrs %26amp; dozens of appearances on 2 seperate losses [kids], same reason.Intrested in doing some work for the citizens advice bureau or get into something simular?
A lot more reading I'm afraid - Child Poverty Action Handbook on Social Security, Housing and Child Support Handbook should get you started. Since Legal Aid is NOT available for much of the Social Security system, many Solicitors don't touch it. Therefore the teaching of Social Security law at a Law School is somewhat scant.

    Good luck my friend.
Go onto the CAB website, i think you can email them from there about working for them.
Apart from contacting the CAB, go to www.do-it.org.uk and register your interest there.
some food place/market like wegmans, tops, burger king, McD
Try your local law advice centre if you have one? Some areas have a welfare rights run by TUC/Council supported?
The best thing to do is to go to your local CAB office and they will let you know. Last time i dealt with CAB the person i spoke to said they are always on the lookout for volunteers. Good luck...

Are there in citizens advice bureau's that specialise in housing issues?

Hi we need some urgant advice on a specific housing issue and where wondering if any there are any citizens advice bureaus that deal specifically with housing tenancy issues on the London area. Or if you knew of any bereaus that where very good in housing issues?

Thank you for your help in this matter. Are there in citizens advice bureau's that specialise in housing issues?
The majority of CABs, especially those in London, have an advisor trained in housing policy and law who should be able to help you with most housing and tenancy issues. Alternatively, you might want to arrange an appointment to see a Housing Advice or Private Sector Assistance officer at your local council. They can sometimes give more specific advice and also have the power to take action against landlords who are acting illegally or failing to meet their obligations as a landlord. Are there in citizens advice bureau's that specialise in housing issues?
Give your local CAB a call, each branch will have or at least know of someone who can offer specialist guidance or alternatively give these guy's a go.

This site has useful tips for tenants too!

Does anyone know what the french equivalent of the CAB (citizens advice bureau) is? and how to get in touch?

I am from Quimper (Brittany France), and have lost all contact with my family and friends since I have been living in England for the last nine years. I would appreciate any information anyone has got. Many thanks.Does anyone know what the french equivalent of the CAB (citizens advice bureau) is? and how to get in touch?
Have you tried posting this question on Yahoo! R茅ponses? Click on 'France' at the bottom of this screen, next to 'Answers International.'

From what I understand, Citizens Advice Bureaux form a network of independent volunteer organizations that offer varying levels of service, sometimes including legal advice. Perhaps your local CAB could provide you with the name of similar organizations in France.

You might try contacting the municipality of Quimper at the following address:

    Mairie Quimper

    44, place Saint-Corentin

    BP 531

    29000 Quimper

You could also register on this site and see if you can obtain information on one of the forums: http://quimper.breizhoo.fr/

    Bonne chance!

Are the citizens advice bureau always right?

I've just got some advice from the Citizens advice bureau. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how acurate their advice about legal stuff is!Are the citizens advice bureau always right?
Usually pretty good.....but everyone can make mistakes.....take their advice then visit another for confirmation. Are the citizens advice bureau always right?
They can be the very opposite to right, so many things they dont know about
Yes! I've never had either wrong advice or bad advice. Maybe, they are just telling you what you don't want to hear?
I went years ago. This kind man (after all, they are volunteers) tried his hardest to help us. But all he could do was look up some information in a book, and we could have done that at the library.
the only offer advice based upon expereince, if you do not want to use their advice then dont.
We are all fallible. If you feel that the information you got is not correct then you have all the right to question further...you can also explore further and confirm information. What you need to keep in mind is that you may not like what you hear....however the information provided to you is based on the information you provide to them.
they wouldn't even help me i found them a waste of time!!!
Their system is updated monthly or when a new law is made effective. they can't always give you the advice you want to hear and they should have refered you to another party if they were unsure. they also have to check with the Advice session superviser before giving a final goodbye. if you are in doubt you can go to another one and present the problem to them.
i've always found them very helpful apart from 1 time this retired lawer was there helping out and didnt seem up to date. Dont what i would have done if they hadn't helped me.
I'd say its a bit hit and miss.

I used to work for a computer company, and we used to get plenty of letters from customers who had been incorrectly advised by CAB about Sale of Goods Act, Distance Selling Regs, etc.
HI there, i found them not very good, they didnt help me one bit..... and they gave me totally diffrent advice to what the police gave me and watchdog...

good luck with wot ever it is u need help with.

hope it all works out well x

  • I have an interview with the citizens advice bureau, how should I go dressed?

It's for a voluntary Advisor position. thanks.I have an interview with the citizens advice bureau, how should I go dressed?
Wearing a suit may seem over the top but it wont lose you any points, let say its the risk-free approach. Wearing something casual may actually work in the opposite way.I have an interview with the citizens advice bureau, how should I go dressed?
Is this a open day or an actual interview? Because I went to one of the open days straight after a proper interview, and many of the people there were wearing jeans. So I would check with them. Or to be on the safe side, wear a suit. Btw, this is not an advisory position in Harrow is it? Cause I'm going in for an open day soon as well.
Tweedy two piece - skirt %26amp; jacket.

Don't forget the mothball old lady smell.

Really I hope it goes well. As long as you're smart then I'm sure you'll have no problem.

It's a difficult job %26amp; can I have an appointment on Thursday morning please.
Dress professionally as you would for any other job interview and treat it as such. Go early too.
I think for any interview you need to dress smartly. So a suit would be ok.
make sure you look your best. A suit, a dark blue suit, shows you are a professional.
It always pays to be smart. Wear a suit.
    try to look quite fly

and make sure u look confident

Can someone tell me where I can get financial/legal advise apart from Citizens Advice Bureau?

I dont know if im calling the wrong numbers but its impossible to get through to speak to anyone and I cant take time off work to go there (without an appointment),and they dont accept emails or letters. So I need some good advice on whether I have a good case to fight off a debt with my debt collectors! Can someone tell me where I can get financial/legal advise apart from Citizens Advice Bureau?
Many financial advisers can help, if only to point you in The right direction. Many will also drop in to your home and have a chat for the price of a cup of tea.

They may well help you out now in exchanhe for some business in the future or a few referrals.

Another option is to get a free consultation with a solicitor. These are usually only 15 minutes so get everything together before you go - better still, write it down concisely in key points so it can be read and understood in a couple of minutes.

I did this: I got some basic advice on how to sort out my problem and then was told that it would cost me 拢160/hour for them to represent me. I said ';I'd think about it';, and did some research on the net (once I knew what to look for). Six months later I am all sorted out. And I never went back to that solicitor (even though she was really cute ... but I digress).

A lot depends on how much you owe, what equity (property) you own, if you are working, etc.

A friend of mine had lots of small debts totalling several thousand pounds, was not working (disabled) and spoke to a friendly solicitor. They went to court and judge made an order that all his debts were lumped together and ge only had to pay 50p a week. Several years later he went back to the office of the courts to see if he could increase his payments as he had some spare cash, and they told him that he shouldn't be paying anything at all as the debt had been wiped 9 months earlier (and no one had told him....).

    Lots of options.

If it is giving you sleepless nights, you feel sick everytime a letter drops through your letter box and you are afraid to answer the phone in case it is a creditor giving you grief - take a day off work and visit the CAB. Be honest with your boss, I'm sure he'll understand and be willing to help.

Two days before going to court to prevent my home being repossessed, my partner was at home when an official letter was delivered. On impulse she opened it and found that something had changed and all my plans were up the kyber. She phoned the mine where I work and told the Mine Manager that I needed to get home immediately to sort things out. He sent a guy 2,000 feet underground to tell me to get to surface immediately, which I did. He told me about my partners phone call, I called her from his office and then explained why I needed to go home. He said no problem, and not to worry as I wouldn't lose any pay!!!! He said he wanted me to get sorted out so I could stick with the job for the long term.

I had it sorted out within 24 hours and 2 weeks ago I finally got rid of a huge weight that had been weighing me down for about 6 years.

I still have my house, I still have my job, I still have my life. But I can walk upright now.

Take the time off work to see the CAB. They can talk to your creditors for you and stall them while things get sorted better than you can. Again, take everything with you and get right to the point.

Your financial problems won't go away. YOU have to do something about them, and you have to do it NOW.

The longer you wait the worse it gets.

Believe me, I know. Can someone tell me where I can get financial/legal advise apart from Citizens Advice Bureau?
hello nattsbb11 I think you should speak to an attorney about your legal and financial problems and ask them what you could do. There are attorneys out there that give free advice you just have to call and find out if they give free advice. There are some attorneys offices that are open on the weekends also you just have to call them and ask them. you should look in the yellow pages for them and see what kind of help they offer. I hope this helps you.
on here is a good start. have you reclaimed bank charges? if not theres loads of sites doing it for you now, search bank charges on google. or try www.clearstart.org. hope this helps.
It depends what kind of financial advice you are looking for. The CAB can advise you on debt management, financial law and benefit entitlement, but not things like investment etc.

You may need to take time off work to call in. You could contact your bank to see if they can help. If it pertains to investment/pension advice then you may have to pay for an independent financial adviser.
Of course the CAB accepts letters! Just write to your nearest branch and ask them to contact you urgently!
    Legal Aid offers free services.

Nearly all solicitors, have first visit, free.

However, you are going to have to make an appointment to see them, as they don't give information over the phone.

Where as Legal Aid, will discuss your problem over the phone with you.

And, if you need to pursue it any further, you will have to see them.

I know, they work, after hours.

Good Luck and hope this helps.

Here in the UK we have the Citizens Advice Bureau. Do any other countries have a similar organisation?

For those who don't know about CAB, it is a registered UK charity, which helps people for free on subjects such as housing, benefits, debt, consumer and loads of other stuff. It would be interesting to know if any other countries have this faciltity. Here in the UK we have the Citizens Advice Bureau. Do any other countries have a similar organisation?
In Ireland we have something similar,it's called Citizens Information Centre, and they're great for providing advice on social benefits, budgeting, entitlements. Here in the UK we have the Citizens Advice Bureau. Do any other countries have a similar organisation?
We do have the CAB in Zimbabwe as well....Many services avalable in Britain are similar to the services in Zimbabwe because its a former britsh colony and most services introduced during colonisation still exist in Zimbabwe. We only have a **** Prez...

Here in Russia we have the KGB
Bet no one from Zimbabwe answers this.

How do you set up a citizens advice bureau?

They have them in England and Germany. They give advice to people on all sorts of problems -- they're free and run by volunteers. How would you set one up? How do the volunteers learn what sort of advice to give? Where does the citizens advice bureau locate itself -- do they get an actual storefront?

My background is in finance and tax law, so I'd be good at helping people with those sorts of problems, but I obviously don't know the answer to everything. Maybe the key is to assemble volunteers with a variety of backgrounds so you can direct them to the right person depending on the problem. Any help would be appreciated. How do you set up a citizens advice bureau?
Ah, more information this time, excellent. It is very good that you have a background in finance and tax law. Have you contacted any non-profit organizations here in the US that already provide this service? Maybe there is a way you can attach yourself to them in order to get your CAB started.

Again, I'd suggest contacting one of the many CABs in the UK, and oh, I just thought of this, have you tried asking this question in the UK section of Answers? I bet you'll get a lot more people there who can help. Best wishes to you!

How do you start a citizens advice bureau?

These are common in Britain, I know they also have them in Germany. I am in the US and am interested in starting one.How do you start a citizens advice bureau?
Well I would advise first to contact the CABs in the UK and ask for their guidance. Have you visited their sites?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Ad鈥?/a>

    http://www.cab.org.nz/contact/index.html

I'm sure they would love to give you advise on the issue (considering they are the ';advice'; bureau, har har).

You'll run into funding issues, the CABs in the UK are funded largely in part by local and government organizations, here in the US that will be less likely to happen.

Do you have a law degree or do you know of lawyers here who are willing to offer their services pro-bono for this cause?

This a monumental task to undertake, but I will not discourage you from taking the first steps. Best wishes to you!
